MATERIALS } > SAND > FLUID ACRYLICS Getting Started: Because sand will add considerable weight, a rigid support is best here. Both of these examples are done on primed Masonite panels. STEP 1: Mix a small amount of sand into a fluid acrylic color. Here, the proportions are about 1:4 and the color is Red Oxide. STEP 2: Apply the sanded paint with an inexpensive brush, and allow the surface to dry. STEP 3: Mix a thin colored glaze and apply it to the sanded surface. Here, Micaceous Iron Oxide, Fluid Matte Medium, and water were combined in equal amounts.

Golden makes several Pumice Gels (fine, medium, and coarse) for instance, which are particularly useful because they dry to form absorbent surfaces that soak up washes and glazes. For this technique, two different proportions of sand to paint are explored.
STEP 3: Use the squeeze bottle to “draw” an open pattern on the freezer paper. STEP 4: Use a toothpick or skewer to pop any bubbles that have formed, and then allow the skin to dry overnight. STEP 5: Once it is fully dry, the acrylic skin should peel off the freezer paper fairly easily. Use a palette knife to get started and assist with fragile areas. STEP 6: Acrylic skins will remain pliable indefinitely and can be stored for future use by stacking them between sheets of wax paper, without which they will stick together.
